ICONIC SOUND ENGINEERS
Alex Rosner Inventor of the Stereo DJ Mixer – used by millions of DJ’s since – Influenced customization of BOZAK mixer to work for Club DJs in 70’s. Alex Rosner began his love affair with sound in the golden age of hi-fi – and by the early ’70s had pioneered the first stereo sound system in clubs, the first pair of tweeter arrays and crossover. You’re likely to hear his name mentioned in connection with the success of legendary New York clubs such as David Mancuso’s The Loft; but you might not know he radically changed the world of DJing when he came up with the prototype for another new gadget – a friendly little mixer with cueing system called Rosie. Alex Rosner has plenty of tricks for people interested in clear, loin-vibrating sound reproduction – but when we say, “That’s magic”, he says, “That’s just ordinary basic principles.” 1971, The First DJ mixer is designed for the Haven Club by Alex Rosner, and nicknamed “Rosie” for its inventor and red color. A one-off stereo design for in-house use by their resident DJ, Francis Grasso, recognized as the Godfather of the modern performing DJ. “There was a guy named Louis Bozak, who made mono mixers for broadcast uses and public address systems use. And it seemed to me that one of those mixers that he had – which had ten in and two out, to go to two zones – was a perfect vehicle, which, with some modification, you could make a stereo mixer. So I said to him one day: “What’s really needed out here is a stereo mixer because stereo is the way to go.” I had read the technical papers from Bell laboratories about [stereo]. That early ‘cocktail party’ effect. I knew that stereo would be a good thing to have in clubs. And up until then, I made my own little stereo mixer using two headphone amplifiers for the cueing system and a sliding fader – a very, very primitive device. My technician painted it red, so they called it Rosie, because it was rose red. And when I met Bozak I said: “I do not want to manufacture these things, but I think you, as a manufacturer of equipment, can make a stereo mixer.” And he said: “OK!” He made the original mixer and he sends it to me for testing. He said: “Test it for ruggedness; I don’t know what to do.” So I took a bottle of Coca Cola and I poured it on the mixer. That was my reliability test, I thought that was a realistic test, little knowing that DJs probably don’t drink Coca Cola’s. But I felt that Coca Cola was corrosive because I knew when I put it on my car battery, it dissolves the corrosion at the battery terminal. So I felt that had some effect. When I poured the Coca Cola in the mixer fader it had no effect. So I got back to Bozak and I said: “You got it, that’s it, it’s reliable!” Then the CMA 10-2 was born, that was a standard of the industry.” The rest, as they say, is history. Thank you Alex.

Richard Long Richard Long (1933 – December 9, 1986) (Sound System Design) Formed Richard Long and Associates. Best known for putting together the sound systems for many classic clubs such as Paradise Garage, Club Zanzibar and others.
In the disco era, the initials RLA loomed large for top-tier DJs and industry insiders. Richard Long & Associates were renowned as the premier designers of dance-club sound systems, but Long wasn’t just a technician, he was an artist, whose designs and installations helped make the disco scene of the ’70s and ’80s what it was. The hottest discos in New York — Paradise Garage, Studio 54, Regine’s — all sported RLA sound systems, but so did cutting-edge clubs all across the globe.
Long’s right-hand man, Kenny Powers, recalls one of his first jobs upon joining RLA in 1980. “I ended up going to Venezuela with Richard,” he remembers, “we built a nightclub in Caracas called Le Parnasse, we built a system over about two weeks. From ’81 till Richard died in ’86…we did a bunch of clubs; a lot of stuff in Europe. We did one job in Germany, one job in Egypt…we did a job in St. Thomas, which was part of Regine’s. She [Regine] was franchising, trying to open up a chain of nightclubs.”
The reason RLA became a worldwide name was that each of their systems was thoughtfully and painstakingly tailored to the individual needs of the space. The process was somewhere between that of a high-end tailor crafting a bespoke suit for a VIP customer and a specially commissioned artist painting a portrait of an esteemed patron. The results won Long not only the awed admiration of DJs and club owners, but honors like the Billboard award for Best Disco Sound Design.
Powers says part of the reason for RLA’s success was their willingness to work with their competitors rather than try to blow them out of the water. In an interview given last year, he recalled, “In the old days, I would do my systems, Alex Rosner did his systems…nobody was badmouthing anybody’s work. Richard went into [legendary NYC nightspot] The Loft, Rosner was involved in the Loft — you had two competitors that were working on the same system together. You never get that anymore, everybody’s got to claim all the glory. It compromises what’s going on.”
After Long’s death, Powers continued to carry the RLA torch forward. As an integral part of the RLA audio empire, he was the best choice to take the reins – it’s no coincidence, for instance, that the hallowed London house music haven Ministry of Sound was outfitted with an RLA system including a bass box named Puissance (French for “power”) in honor of Long’s colleague and successor. Heading up the company, Powers kept the same lofty level of work going all the way into the 21st century – just last year, he was at the helm of the creation and installation of a system for one of New York’s most hotly anticipated new venues, District 36.
For Powers, it’s been a long, fruitful sonic sojourn. “In the early ’70s I started doing car stereos, and I did my first club in about ’74,” he recalls. And these days, believe it or not, in addition to his RLA duties he keeps an ear out for the sounds of the river lapping against the sides of his ship, as the real-deal captain of a ferry boat for New York’s Harbor Experience line. Presumably, the folks at NYHE figured that if Powers could survive the disco era unscathed, he’d have no trouble keeping his head above water.

The following is a list of all the Clubs and Discos that our Board of Director Frankie Sestito (with a little help from his friends) put together. We really appreciate what Frankie and all the people that helped in getting the names together for induction into the L.O.V. Hall of Fame.
These were places that made going out on a weeknight the thing to do. There was a different place to go every night of the week. You would know everyone there, the music was great, and you didn’t care if you came home at 4 am just to get up at 7 am to go to work or school.
In this day and age, we could never have what we had back then. But you’ll always have your memories.
